Running Marathon in the North Pole
Author:

I’ve heard many examples of ultra-running but this one gets the (freezing) cake: how about a very very cool 26.2 miles at the North Pole?

On April 7, 2007, a group of super athletes -- motivated by a curious drive totally alien to 99.9% of the humanity -- will run a marathon in the North Pole by paying 9,300 Euros for the privilege.

Imagine stopping at 90N point, on the exact “top” of the world, just long enough to have your picture taken and hopefully not for a single moment too long? That would be a photo to save and savor for eternity indeed.

Did you know that this is the only marathon route in the world certified by the Association of International Marathons and Road Races which runs completely over water, i.e., the waters of the Arctic Ocean?

So you’ll be running over the water but with little fear that the immense ice sheet under your feet will ever melt with or without global warming. Just keep your fingers crossed.

The schedule of the Brave Bunch is as follows:

April 5, 2007 - the athletes arrive in Spitsbergen, Norway.

April 6, 2007 - they fly to the base camp in the North Pole.

April 7, 2007 - The 2007 North Pole Marathon officially begins (and hopefully ends the same day for all the participants).

April 8, 2007 - Returning to Spitsbergen, Norway.

April 9, 2007 - Day off.

April 10, 2007 - Returning home.
