The rule is to buy a house that will appeal to the largest number of future potential buyers. This requires you to make a number of different “location” choices. Which community? Your choice should be narrowed to only a few local communities. You want to buy in a community with a viable and stable economy and a good mixture of commercial and business district. Pay close attention to the local schooling system even if you don’t have school-age children or do not intend to have children because many potential buyers often have this concern. Also, property tax in one town maybe higher than others. Usually, potential buyers will choose not to buy a house in the community with higher taxes but it’s not always the case because you will often find that the “cost per square foot” is lower in towns with higher taxes. Meaning, you can buy a bigger house for less money so the mortgage payment plus taxes could result in approximately the same monthly housing costs.
